Trackpad

The Trackpad and the use of gestures...it's amazing and it's designed so that you don't have to use a mouse.
*NOTE: As settings are customized, the gestures may change.

  • Tap to click


  • Secondary click (right-click)


    Two ways to do this.
    1) Two-Fingers click
    2) Control + click
  • View Mission Control


    4-Fingers UP
  • Show desktop


    Thumb and 3-Fingers (Reverse Pinch)
  • Open Launchpad


    Thumb and 3-Fingers (Pinch)
  • Two-finger scroll


    Discuss why the swipe goes that direction. It mimics the iPad swipe.
  • Swipe between full-screen apps



    Discuss FULL SCREEN apps. Demonstrate how to make an app full screenClick on the arrows in the right-hand corner to make the app full screen.

  • Swipe to navigate


    Use Safari. Open a window and click on a link or two or three. Practice going back pages using this technique. (This replaces the back button).
  • Tap to Zoom & Pinch to zoom


    Two-Fingers Double-Tap to Zoom OR Two-Fingers Reverse Pinch to Zoom.
  • Define a word!


    Three-finger tap on a word to get the definition.

Customize your settings

This is where you can go to change your Trackpad options.

Dock

Change location, add / remove / arrange applications *Note the light on below the icon means that app is running



Finder

    • Look at the icon in the dock that represents "Finder"

Empty Trash

    • Click and hold trash can OR Finder > Empty Trash

Accessibility

    • Set up your Screen Zoom
      • System Preferences > Universal Access > Seeing
        • Click on Options...(set your key to "control") see the picture below.

        • After clicking Done - PRACTICE IT!
    • Configure Speech
      • System Preferences > Dictation & Speech > Text to Speech

          Highlight ANY words and use this to have it read to you.
        • Click on "Change Key..."

          Be sure to pick CONTROL, NOT Command!
        • Select "Control S" to make those your keys to press if you want something read aloud. *Note the same keystroke stops the reading as well.

Make a PDF file

    • File > Print > Save as PDF...

Take a screenshot

    • Command > Shift > 4 (click and drag what you want a picture of)
    • Command > Shift > 3 (takes a pic of the ENTIRE screen)
    • Command > Shift > 4 (and immediately click the spacebar) to get a window...or menu or whatever.

QuickTime

    • File > New Movie, Audio or Screen Recording *Note that for a screen recording, you'll have to chose your mic first.

Be sure to pick a mic before recording your screen!

Spotlight

    • Find ANYTHING by clicking on the magnifying glass in the top right-hand corner of your screen.
      • If you are a shortcut user (and I am) use this shortcut (Command - spacebar) This brings up Spotlight so that you can begin typing!
      • Spotlight is also a calculator and a dictionary.

Quickview

    • Highlight a document, picture, or pdf on your desktop or in a folder.
    • Once it's highlighted, click spacebar for a "Quick" view.
    • This allows you to view the item without having to actually start an application.
